Santa Rita Neighborhood

Artists are invited to wander and paint the historic homes and parks of the Santa Rita neighborhood, named for the famous Santa Rita no. 1 oil well west of San Angelo. On May 28, 1923, the well began gushing 'Black Gold' and started the first oil boom in West Texas.

• Beautiful historic and stately homes line tree-filled streets in Santa Rita

• Rock-lined Sulfur Draw creek, constructed by the WPA in the 1940's, winds through the neighborhood, creating a meandering green oasis

• Sunken Garden Park nearby hosts the very paintable Salmon Sculpture Competition

• The Civic League Park will tempt the artists with more rockwork done by WPA workers, towering Cypress along the river, and the world-renowned International Waterlily Gardens.
