The EnPleinAirTEXAS Competition

EnPleinAirTEXAS started in 2014 as a way to celebrate San Angelo's western heritage and distinctive history of the Texas Artists Camp of the 1920's.  For 10 years, the EnPleinAirTEXAS Competition attracted 165 renowned plein air artists who enjoyed San Angelo's hospitality, and who painted every hidden corner and backroad, rivers, and the surrounding ranchlands.

The EnPleinAirTEXAS Competition quickly became one of the Top 5 plein air competitions in the country, attracting award-winning artists from 36 states and 4 countries.  Over 1500 paintings of this area are now showcased in homes and businesses in San Angelo and all over Texas.

EnPleinAirTEXAS is a signature event of The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts and a key component of San Angelo's designation as the Visual Arts Capital of Texas.

The EnPleinAirTEXAS Ranch Fellowship is an outgrowth of the success of those first 10 years of the Competition.  As we continue to embrace the history of the 1920s Texas Artists Camp, much more is on the horizon for the museum's EnPleinAirTEXAS. Saddle up and hold onto your paintbrushes!

A major focus of EnPleinAirTEXAS is to engage with San Angelo school children who were treated to in-class visits with the artists during the competition weeks.

The Art Collectors STAMPEDE. An annual exhibition and sale of more than 300 artworks, created by the participating artists during the competition week.

The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts' EnPleinAirTEXAS is reimagining the area's 100 year plein air history with artists from around the world, creating an ongoing artistic dialogue that increases the visibility and participation of plein air painting with children, adults, and rural West Texas communities.
